I have now spent 3 weeks in my new post as Professor and Director of the Fashion School at Kent State University in Ohio. It has been an amazing start; so much to learn.

Sadly, my predecessor, Dr. Elizabeth Rhodes, passed away this week on thursday night. Her legacy will continue to be very strong for a long time to come at Kent State University. With the strength of vision and boundless drive, she accomplished incredible things for the School of Fashion. I hope to be able to continue and to expand that vision in a manner befitting of her memory.

Mackintosh Re-interpreted: Take Two - The Hill House!

At the Centre for Advanced Textiles (CAT), we just finished installing the second version of our Mackintosh Re-interpreted textiles exhibition at the Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland. The exhibition opens next Wednesday, 4th April - with the start of season opening of the Hill House, which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the Blackie family in 1902.

The Mackintosh Re-interpreted exhibition will be up for 3 months. Some photos of the installation are shown below:

"Summer"
This was a collaborative piece with Jean Parsons and Susan Strawn. There are two layers of digitally printed silk; silk broadcloth below, silk gauze above. The transparency of the gauze creates an amplification effect with the imagery. Susan cut extra digitally printed silk into strips and created the knitted hood, cuffs and hemline.

This is a print section from a design I called "Overload"

These two are called "Transformation: Icarus (I and II)" and they were collaboratively designed with Jean Parsons. One is printed on wool gabardine, the other on silk habotai.

This piece is called "I still can't find it; the right colour"

"Moving Through" is a rectangle with a tube going from one side to the other. It can be worn as a tube dress or hung as a 2D piece.

In 2005 I created this mock-up piece for the "Digital Perceptions" exhibition at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland. What I wanted to be able to do was create an engineered print in a jacket that was part of a fabric wall.

In 2007, I continued the idea for the "New Craft Future Voices" conference in Dundee to create the piece called "Wearing this distorted space". I first took photographs of the gallery space where I would be displaying the work. Then I used the photos as a backdrop for the imagery that I was creating to fill into the jacket, so that it would create a trompe l'oiel effect when exhibited. When I installed the piece, I created two planes of fabric that were stretched into a cove in the Cooper Gallery. The photo below shows the background panel which was not actually visible once the entire work was installed. I used one of the photos of the gallery and distorted it, leaving in some random artwork and a table as part of the image.

Then I installed another panel in front of the previous one, concealing it completely. The front panel had the jacket integrated into the composition so that the imagery continues across all of the seamlines. Below is a shot during the installation process.

This shows the 'floatiing' composition that I hung in the middle of my re-representation of the gallery.

Once it was completely installed, I used two digital cameras and two LCD projectors to create the final effect with the piece. One camera was capturing live imagery from the front panel and projecting it onto a section of the back panel. Another camera was capturing what was being projected onto the back panel and re-projecting it out onto an adjacent wall in front of the piece.

When a person would try on the garment, at first they would think that they are just seeing a projected image of themselves on the adjacent wall, but if they looked closely, they would realise that the projection on the wall did not match the imagery of the fabric panel they were in (it had the table, etc. from the back panel as well). In this way, I was trying to communicate the connection and disconnection that we have to our environments when we aren't clear about what we want from digital technologies.

Ant Kimono - the continuous path

This kimono design will be printed out tonight on silk crepe de chine. It is being used to help demonstrate the possibilities that we are developing with our 'kimono generator' concept, pioneered at the Centre for Advanced Textiles (www.centreforadvancedtextiles.com).

"Awaken" - the Glasgow School of Art Archive project

I recently created a piece called "Drawn Out" for the "Awaken" exhibition that opened in the Mackintosh Gallery at the Glasgow School of Art on Friday, 23rd January. All of the staff affiliated with the Textiles Department at GSA were asked to select some pieces from the GSA Archives and Collection and use them to inspire new interpretive works. The exhibition was curated by Jimmy Stephen-Cran (Head of Textiles Department) and Helen McGilp in the School of Design. The show is up until the 28th February. Check it out! Mackintosh Re-interpreted Exhibition

The first showing of the Mackintosh Re-interpreted exhibition that we created at CAT for the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow finished in December 2008. Versions of the exhibition will be shown next in the south of France (Port-Vendres) and at the Hill House in Helensburgh, Scotland. Both venues plan to have their exhibitions installed for the beginning of April. Here is a silent video we created of our process, along with some of the exhibition photos.

Rainbow Tunnel: From Marin to the Golden Gate

I just finished this piece which is based on a pattern design concept that I worked on with Jean Parsons at Iowa State University. The photography began with a shot that I took while driving through the 'Rainbow Tunnel' from Sausalito to San Francisco.

The idea behind this series of pieces is that the are wearable, but also wall pieces; they are tied to a specific place conceptually. The jacket has zippers under the arm and up the side seam which can be unzipped and then re-zipped to the backdrop fabric that has a corresponding image.

CRM Fingerprint

The kimono that I was creating for the Kimono Mackintosh event ended up being called "CRM Fingerprint" because one of the prints I used in the design had remnants of a smudged fingerprint from the original hand-painted sketch that Charles Rennie Mackintosh had made. The kimono is reversible, with the outside being inspired from a variety of his designs for textiles (from the ones held in the Hunterian Art Gallery and Museum Archive (http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/Mackintosh/index.html) and was a lead-in design for the exhibition that I am designing/coordinating for the Centre for Advanced Textiles (CAT) (http://www.centreforadvancedtextiles.com) to be installed at the Hunterian from September 5 - December 5, 2008 (http://www.hunterian.gla.ac.uk:443/museum/whatsOnItem.php?item=202).

I won the competition! The prize was free flights from London to Tokyo. :) Now I really need to figure out when to go and what to see. Here are photos of the piece:

I am also traveling to Barcelona to present at the Protextile Digital conference in mid-June; and then will be going to China to be a visiting professor at the Beijing Institute for Fashion Technology during the last part of June.

This marks the beginning...

Herein lies the first post created for the Digital Textile Design blog site. I will start with an attempt at uploading some of my recent artwork. The piece shown is called "Oops, Sorry" and will be on display in the "Wearable Expressions" juried exhibition in Palos Verdes, California from 22nd February - 13th April, 2008.

This piece is called "Moving Through". Both this and Oops, Sorry can be displayed flat or worn on the body.

I am currently working on a new kimono design for the "Japanese Culture Society and the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society" kimono competition in Glasgow, Scotland, so posts of those designs should come soon.
